The Department of Earth System Science (ESS) at UC Irvine seeks a permanent half- to full-time scientific programmer with enthusiasm for applying advanced computing techniques to global environmental problems. The programmer will conduct interdisciplinary coupled model simulations at the newly established Earth System Modeling Facility (www.ess.uci.edu/esmf). The ESMF is a collaborative faculty effort to develop and apply sophisticated numerical models of the Earth system to improve understanding of physical, hydrological, chemical, and biogeochemical interactions in the climate system. ESMF facilities include an eight node, 88-CPU, IBM p655/p690 supercomputer with 32 TB disk. As lead scientific programmer, you will couple physical models, run simulations, analyze and visualize large geophysical datasets. Required: MS or equivalent experience in computer science, atmospheric science, chemistry, engineering, or related field. Strong skills in Fortran9X and/or C/C++. Skill in software development (e.g., CVS, Make). Familiarity with analysis and visualization of large geophysical datasets. Experience with numerical models on UNIX computers. Desired: Knowledge of geophysical data visualization and analysis software (e.g., IDL, NCL, Matlab, Perl, or Python), data storage standards (e.g., netCDF, HDF), parallel programming techniques and message passing (e.g., OpenMP, MPI).
